For some folks in communities of color across Los Angeles, Summers in the City evoke a nostalgic and romanticized dreamscape, dancing with Backyard BBQs and Asadas, evening cruises down the blvd, and oldie jams blasting down the block. Summer itself is the season of youth, love, idleness and joy. A time to slow down, be playful, and bask in the radiance of life. Children play outside, neighbors gather on porches, and communities share space. Summers in Los Angeles have long been a beautiful, culture filled dream. But as systems collapse, governments fail, and the people grow restless, is a dream, all that remains?.
When capitalism / colonialism forces us as marginalized communities to constantly take action and respond to each act of malice and injustice, how do we, as a community, work to preserve and protect our own peace, joy, and right to stillness?
Ephemeral Summer is a celebration of radical stillness, joy and gathering within the Black, Brown and Indigenous communities of Los Angeles, and an acknowledgement of the socio-economic issues that make BIPOC stillness, joy and gathering acts of revolution.
